About the test

This test measures four essential hormones that are known to affect men’s overall health and wellness

This test will measure your estradiol, testosterone, DHEA, and cortisol to determine if your levels are within the normal range. Together, these hormone levels can offer a broad overview of your hormonal balance and overall health and wellness.

Estradiol

Estradiol (E12) is the strongest of the three naturally occurring estrogens. Although it is the primary female hormone, estradiol is found in all sexes. The estrogen in men is mainly formed from testosterone by aromatase, an enzyme commonly found in belly fat. It is involved in sperm maturation and helps maintain a healthy libido. Estradiol also plays a role in maintaining bones, improving blood flow in coronary arteries, brain function, and male fertility. In men, estradiol levels naturally increase with age.

Free Testosterone

Free testosterone refers to the testosterone that is not attached to proteins. Total testosterone includes free testosterone and testosterone bound to the proteins in the blood. In men, testosterone is responsible for the development of sexual characteristics, facial and body hair, increased sexual drive, and sperm production. While it’s often regarded as the primary male sex hormone, testosterone is essential for bone density, libido, body fat distribution, and muscle mass across all sexes.

DHEA

DHEA, or dehydroepiandrosterone, is an androgen hormone primarily produced by the adrenal glands. In men, the testes and brain also make a small amount. DHEA is a precursor hormone, meaning it has little biological effect on its own. However, when it’s converted into other hormones like testosterone and estrogen, it has powerful effects. DHEA peaks in early adulthood and gradually decreases with age.

Cortisol

Cortisol is a steroid hormone produced in the adrenal glands and released in response to stressors like illness and exercise. While it’s often referred to as the “stress hormone,” cortisol also has many other bodily roles, including blood sugar and energy metabolism regulation. Typically, cortisol levels are highest in the morning and lowest in the middle of the night.

What is cortisol, and how does it affect men’s health?

Cortisol is a hormone produced by the adrenal glands in response to stress. It plays a role in the body's "fight or flight" response and helps regulate several physiological processes, including metabolism, immune function, and the inflammatory response.

In men, chronically elevated cortisol levels can lead to a number of health problems, including unwanted weight gain, decreased muscle mass, and a decrease in bone density. It is also associated with an increased risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, and depression.

Additionally, studies have shown that long-term exposure to high cortisol levels may decrease testosterone levels, which can result in reduced libido, erectile dysfunction, and other sexual dysfunction.

What is DHEA, and how does it affect men’s health?

Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) is a hormone primarily made by the adrenal glands. It plays a role in estrogen and testosterone production.

DHEA levels tend to decline as men age, which has been linked to reduced muscle mass, strength, and bone density.

Low DHEA levels have been linked to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and depression.

Symptoms of DHEA deficiency may include prolonged fatigue, poor concentration, and a diminished sense of well-being.

What is estradiol, and how does it affect men’s health?

Estradiol is an estrogen hormone that is present in both men and women. In men, estradiol levels are typically much lower than in women, but they still play an essential role in maintaining overall health. Maintaining normal estradiol levels is necessary for maintaining bone density, muscle mass, and sexual function.

Low estradiol levels in men can lead to a number of health problems, including osteoporosis, breast enlargement (gynecomastia), excess belly fat, and decreased sexual function. Low levels can also be a sign of an underlying medical condition, such as a tumor on the testicles or adrenal glands.

On the other hand, high estradiol levels in men can lead to symptoms such as infertility, erectile dysfunction, and depression.

What is testosterone, and how does it affect men’s health?

Testosterone is the primary androgen, meaning it stimulates the development of male characteristics, such as facial and body hair growth, a deepened voice, and muscle mass. Testosterone also plays a role in maintaining bone density, sperm production, and sexual function.

Although it’s commonly referred to as the “male sex hormone,” testosterone is also found in both sexes, however, men typically produce significantly more than women.

In men, low testosterone may contribute to a number of symptoms, including decreased muscle mass and strength, reduced bone density, decreased sexual function, and increased body fat. Low energy levels, mood swings, and depression are also possible symptoms.

Additionally, low testosterone levels have been associated with an increased risk of osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes.

On the other hand, high testosterone levels, although not common, can cause symptoms such as acne, hair loss, and an enlarged prostate. Infertility, insomnia, mood swings, and unexplained weight gain may also occur.

Couldn’t get enough blood. Waste of money.

It’s kind of expensive but the results are similar to what I got from the lab last year.

I got the test because I’ve been struggling with acne. I’ve tried everything to clear my skin but so far nothing has worked. I had a feeling my hormones had something to do with it. Sure enough, my testosterone came back high. I made an appointment with my doctor to find out what I should do next.

I bought this test for my daughter a few weeks ago. She was struggling with acne and it was starting to take a toll on her self-esteem. She finished the test in a few minutes, and her test results came back fast. She did mention that she had trouble filling up the saliva tubes, but otherwise, the test went fine. Her results came back normal so we’re still trying to get the the bottom of her acne.

I purchased this because my naturopathic doctor wanted to assess my hormone levels. What I appreciate about this test came with everything I needed. The first blood prick went smoothly, but I encountered difficulties with the second one. Despite using multiple lancets, the blood barely filled the designated circles. The saliva test was relatively simple to perform.

Filling the tube with saliva is hard!!! You’re supposed to do it within 30 minutes of waking up and you can’t have water right before you take the test. I know I’m not the only one who has a dry mouth when they wake up. Not sure it’s worth the hassle.

I ordered this test because I was starting a new diet and I wanted to get a baseline of where my numbers were. This tests estradiol, testosterone, DHEA, and cortisol. I was mostly interested in cortisol and testosterone because I know they can play a pretty big role in your health. I was really impressed with my report. It gave me all of my numbers AND why they were important for my health. When I’ve gotten reports from the lab, they only give you the measurement and your doctor just focuses on the numbers that are out of range. Sometimes they will take the time to explain the numbers that are almost out of range but that depends on the doctor. Overall, I’m very happy with my results. Once I get my diet dialed in, I’m going to order another test.
