About the test

This test measures your vitamin D (25-OH D) level

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble nutrient essential for human survival. While it is most well-known for its role in regulating calcium and phosphate levels in the body, an increasing amount of research shows that it plays a much more significant role, especially within the immune system. This test will show your vitamin D level and whether it is in the optimal range.

Vitamin D (25-OH D)

Vitamin D forms when your skin absorbs sunlight and is found in natural and fortified foods. It plays a role in various bodily processes, including bone formation and maintenance, as well as immune function. Research shows that it also plays a role in lowering inflammation. Vitamin D forms in the body when your skin absorbs sunlight and is found in natural and fortified food sources. Low intake of vitamin D may lead to a vitamin D deficiency.

Questions and Answers

What is vitamin D?

Vitamin D is a nutrient that helps the body absorb calcium and phosphorus, two minerals that are crucial for maintaining strong and healthy bones. It is known as the "sunshine vitamin" because the body can produce it when the skin is exposed to sunlight. However, many people do not get enough vitamin D from sunlight alone and may need to obtain it from other sources, like food or supplements.

Vitamin D also plays a role in immune function, cell growth, reducing inflammation, and keeping your muscles and nerves working normally.

Before your body can use vitamin D, your liver must change it into 25 hydroxyvitamin D, or 25(OH)D. Most vitamin D blood tests, including the Home Test Box Vitamin D Test, measure the level of 25(OH)D in your blood.

Your kidneys use 25(OH)D to make "active vitamin D," which allows your body to use calcium to build bones and help other cells work properly.

Vitamin D deficiency can lead to weak bones and an increased risk of osteoporosis and fractures.

What are the different types of vitamin D?

Two forms of vitamin D are important for nutrition: vitamin D2 and vitamin D3. Vitamin D2 mainly comes from fortified foods like breakfast cereals, milk, and other dairy items. Vitamin D3 is made by your body when you are exposed to sunlight. It is also found in some foods, including eggs and fatty fish, such as salmon, tuna, and mackerel.

In your bloodstream, vitamin D2 and D3 change into a form 25 hydroxyvitamin D, also known as 25(OH)D.  The Home Test Box Vitamin D Test measures 25(OH)D levels.

What do I need to prepare for an at-home vitamin D test?

You don’t need any special preparations for an at-home Vitamin D test.

What will my vitamin D test results tell me?

Your Home Test Box Vitamin D Test will tell you how much 25 hydroxyvitamin D, or 25(OH)D is in your blood. Testing this form of vitamin D is the most accurate way to measure how much vitamin D is in your blood.

What is required to take a vitamin D test?

The Home Test Box Vitamin D Test requires you to self-collect a blood spot sample. View details on how to collect your blood spot sample here.

What is the difference between vitamin D deficiency and vitamin D insufficiency?

Vitamin D deficiency refers to very low levels of vitamin D; vitamin D insufficiency refers to mildly low levels of vitamin D.

What is a vitamin D test used for?

A healthcare provider may order a vitamin D test if you have signs or symptoms of a bone condition that may be related to a vitamin D deficiency. These signs and symptoms include the following:

  • Bone pain
  • Muscle weakness
  • Soft or deformed bones
  • Weak bones or fractures
  • Low bone density

Mildly low vitamin D levels don’t usually cause symptoms, so your healthcare may order a vitamin D test if they determine that you have a high risk of developing a deficiency.

What should you do if your vitamin D test results are abnormal?

If your vitamin D levels are abnormal, you should consult your healthcare provider for the next steps.
